Follansbee seeks input on park usage

File photo SURVEY ONGOING – Follansbee officials are seeking input from the public on the best uses for the city's parks and playgrounds, including Mahan Park located in the city's downtown.

FOLLANSBEE – The Follansbee Park Advisory Board is seeking input from the community on what kinds of activities and improvements could be undertaken.

An online survey currently is available for residents to share their thoughts on the city’s parks. It can be found directly at https://thecityoffollansbee.com/park-survey/

with links also available through the City of Follansbee’s website and Facebook page.

“Your input will help us better understand park usage, community needs and potential improvements as we plan for the future,” notes a message shared with the survey.

The survey is composed of 12 questions focusing on uses for individual ward parks, recreational activities, how information should be shared and opportunities to volunteer.

For example, respondents are asked what would make them more likely to use their ward park and given options of cleaner/better maintenance, more activities/events, better lighting, benches/picnic tables, walking path/trail, safer feel/visibility, better equipment for kids, bathrooms, better parking/access or another option.

Options for activities include outdoor movie nights, concerts, kids games, holiday events, fitness classes, sports tournaments, craft days, community picnics, yard games or nature events/scavenger hunts.

There also are questions concerning the city’s main parks, feelings of safety in the city’s parks, whether residents would be willing to volunteer for park events or improvement efforts and the types of events with which they would assist.

One event currently being organized is Chalk the Walk, to be held from noon to 2 p.m. May 23 at Follansbee Municipal Park.

Follansbee Municipal Park features four shelters which are available for rent during the summer season, as well as the city swimming pool, playgrounds and more. Rentals also are available for the Pony, softball and Little League ball fields.

Mahan Park, meanwhile, includes playground equipment, a basketball court and a shelter.

There also are playgrounds and tennis courts on Highland Hills Drive and a playground and other features at Parkview Park on Woodland Street and Jefferson Park on Jefferson Street.
