CommonSpirit Health reaches agreement to transfer Trinity Health System ownership to UPMC
File AGREEMENT REACHED — CommonSpirit Health, parent company of Trinity Health System, has reached an agreement to transfer ownership of Trinity to UPMC, officials said Monday afternoon.
STEUBENVILLE — University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and CommonSpirit Health have signed a definitive agreement to transfer ownership of Trinity Health System to UPMC, officials said Monday afternoon.
The transfer includes Trinity Medical Center West, Trinity Medical Center East, Trinity St. Clairsville Neighborhood Hospital, Trinity Twin City Medical Center and associated clinics. The transaction is expected to be completed this fall, pending regulatory review and customary closing conditions.
“Trinity Health System and UPMC share a commitment to providing top-tier care and serving the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Dwayne Richardson, interim president of Trinity Health System. “UPMC’s proven track record of community service and compassionate approach to care were key factors in our decision, and will significantly benefit our patients.”
Terms of the proposed deal were not available, but UPMC’s acquisition of Trinity would mark its first expansion into Ohio, earlier reports indicated.
“At the heart of this integration is the enduring commitment of both teams to deliver compassionate, high-quality clinical care and exceptional community services to the Ohio Valley,” said Leslie Davis, president and CEO of UPMC. “We appreciate CommonSpirit Health’s thoughtful diligence in choosing UPMC for the transfer of Trinity Health System. We look forward to a bright future ahead for our patients and community.”
Last year, Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health and Trinity leadership initiated a search to identify a regional health system that could enhance the services and clinical offerings of Trinity Health System. The intent was to keep high-quality health care sustainable and locally available for today and future generations, hospital officials said.
The deal between UPMC and Trinity will be the latest change to health care in the Tri-State Area. In 2025, Weirton Medical Center became a full member of the West Virginia University Health System. That facility, located on Colliers Way, has been rebranded as WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center.
