Cadiz Road improvement project moves forward with bids set for June 2

WINTERSVILLE — Bids for the Cadiz Road improvement project are expected to go out June 2, members of Village Council learned during Thursday’s meeting.

The project will include the replacement of a mile-long section of water line between the village water tank on Woodridge Drive and Park Drive; repaving the road from the intersection with Canton Road to Park Drive; and the replacement of sections of sidewalk along both sides, as well as the installation of handicap-accessible curbs.

Village Administration Jesse Kosegi said that the bidding process would be done virtually. He added there is no timetable for when the work could begin. That will depend on which company gets the bid and what its workload is, he explained.

Kosegi said that he and staff in the utility department continue to get acclimated to the new billing process. He said that as of Thursday, there were between 50 and 60 water meters that needed to be installed or undergo troubleshooting to complete the water system upgrade project.

Mayor Mike Petrella said that the village had received $65,683.39 in marijuana tax revenue from the state for March. He added he and Solicitor Jake Linn expect to be able to present a finalized ordinance that will allow the village to create an investment account for that tax money during the next council meeting.

Council also voted 4-2 to make a $5,000 donation to Thunder in the Ville. Voting no were Councilmen Bob Merriman and Jason Mattern.

This year’s edition of the annual fireworks festival that has for years marked the start of the region’s Fourth of July celebrations has been scheduled for 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 27 at the Jefferson County Airpark. Interstate Waste Services is the presenting sponsor.

Petrella said the village is joining with Wednesdays in Wintersville, America 250 and the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County to present an outdoor movie night at 9 p.m. June 3. The film “Dog Man” will be shown at the Edward P. Laman Community Dog Park, he said.

The free presentation is part of the Ohio Goes to the Movies project.

Council also heard readings of several resolutions and ordinances, including the third reading of an ordinance adopting an employee handbook and the second reading of an ordinance amending the village’s employee personnel manual.

Petrella said the village’s spring bulk pick-up will be conducted on the first four Mondays of June and will be based on the day residents normally have their garbage collected.

The collection for residents whose regular garbage collection is on Tuesdays will be June 1. Pick-up for residents whose normal collection is on Wednesdays will be June 8, while pick-up for residents whose normal collection day is on Thursdays will be June 15 and pick-up for residents whose normal collection day is on Fridays will be June 22.

In other items, it was announced:

• The Steel Valley Antique Car Club Show will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Indian Creek High School;

Registration is available at the Village Building or at the park on the program’s first day; and

Petrella announced the next council meeting will be moved to 7 p.m. May 27 because of scheduling conflicts.
