STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville Board of Education officially accepted the resignation of a teacher at the center of a viral video controversy while also honoring a three-time state wrestling champion during Wednesday’s meeting.

Scott Lane, an American history teacher, resigned after comments attributed to him during a classroom session circulated widely on social media, drawing both criticism and support.

About 15 students walked out of Steubenville High School last week as a protest in support of Lane. Several carried signs reading “Bring Back Mr. Lane, Justice for Scottie Lane,” “We love you, Mr. Lane. You don’t deserve this,” and “He told the truth. That’s why we are here.”

In the video, shared hundreds of times, Lane is heard criticizing President Donald Trump over a bombing of an elementary school in Iran and making additional comments regarding mentions of Trump in the FBI files on Jeffrey Epstein. The posts have generated mixed reactions online.

Talea Guntrum, who on Sunday won her third state wrestling title, was recognized for her efforts.

She became only the ninth female in state tournament history to win at least three state titles with a pin of United’s Auston Brown. She finished the season with a record of 45-0.

“This is a remarkable achievement that puts you in an elite class,” Superintendent Melinda Young said while honoring Guntrum, who wrestled at 135 pounds.

The junior will have a chance to join another special group — a state title in next year’s meet would make her only the sixth female to win four titles.

Young added that her accomplishments were extraordinary, and her legacy is being written in a way that will inspire future athletes.

“We celebrate your dedication and hard work,” Young said.

Guntrum also performs well in the classroom, Young added while pointing out her 4.1 grade-point average.

Board President Bill Hendricks thanked Guntrum for representing the school system.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Guntrum read a statement asking the board to make sure that in future years, girls wrestling can have the same support and opportunities as other teams.
