Edison Plans Transition Night Wednesday
RICHMOND — Edison High School is gearing up for its inaugural Transition Night to help students with disabilities and their families plan for life after high school.
Activities are set for Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and it is open to students ages 14 and older with disabilities, along with their parents or guardians, who want to prepare for a successful transition to adult life after graduation. District Director of Special Education Christina Henderson is organizing the evening and said vendors will be on hand with information and other resources to help youth take the next step.
“This is the first annual Transition Night for Edison,” Henderson said. “Transition Night is an opportunity to connect with community agencies and resources that support employment and workforce readiness, education and training options, independent living, financial and family supports, and social and community involvement.”
Featured vendors include workforce and employment services, trade schools and community colleges, support services and family resources, Social Security, guardianship services, social and recreational programs, and banking and financial services. Among them are Ohio Means Jobs, PALS, OhioRISE, SVRTA, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities and more. Local agencies are invited to take part and set up will begin at 4:30 p.m. Henderson has contacted area resources and said having them together in one space would be a great benefit for the students and their families.
“The purpose is to help students and families learn about available adult services, ask questions, and begin the process of connecting with supports and other transition-related needs. Families will have the opportunity to speak directly with agency representatives and, when appropriate, begin applications or enrollment for services.”
Agencies will be provided space to share information, materials, and guidance relevant to transition planning.
Anyone interested in attending as a patron or vendor may contact Henderson for more information by calling (740) 282-0065, Ext. 1106, or emailing christina.henderson@edisonwildcats.org.
