WINTERSVILLE — This Saturday, area residents can partake of a large breakfast, view a variety of quilts and witness a unique competition between two public officials when the Wednesdays in Wintersville committee presents Breakfast and Bedding.
Set for 8 a.m. to noon at Wintersville Methodist Church’s Center for Hope, the event will help to defray costs for the annual street fair, which will return in May.
Joel John, the committee’s chairman, said many area businesses have come together to provide food and other materials for the breakfast.
For a donation of the donor’s choice, each patron may choose from pancakes, sausage, bacon, has browns, an egg casserole, cinnamon rolls and coffee, juice or milk.
“I think every business that serves breakfast in Wintersville is represented in our menu,” said John, who will be among volunteers serving up the pancakes.
“We have a whole wonderful crew that will be helping,” he said.
An assortment of toppings will be available for the pancakes.
John encourages those interested in attending to make reservations, as a limited number of tables for eight will be set up in the church’s social hall.
Reservations and take-out orders can be placed by calling (740) 632-1433.
The take-out orders will include a sampling of the various breakfast items and a free tray of cookies prepared by Macaronz by Kristina.
Perhaps the largest number of “flapjacks” will be consumed by two public officials, Mayor Mike Petrella and Village Police Chief Lou Vandeborne, who will take part at 10 a.m. in a pancake-eating contest officiated by Jefferson County Commissioner Tony Morelli.
Attendees also can view an assortment of quilts and purchase a $1 chance on a red and blue, single-size quilt in the Sweet Liberty pattern produced by local quilters Jolanna Herceg and Sharon Petrilla.
Area residents are invited to lend their own quilts for display during the event and should bring them to the church hall at 702 Main St. by 1 p.m. Friday.
John said the group hopes to raise up to $2,500 for this year’s series of street fairs, which again will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month from May to September.
He said members have picked the following themes — magic, superheroes, patriotism, back-to-school and Oktoberfest — and have booked musical guests for each month.
“We have a nice array of entertainment this year, a little more mixed than last year’s,” said John.
Festival-goers again will find the musicians in the lounge area behind Exquisite Creations by Joel with the Knotty Pint mobile bar serving up a variety of drinks.
John said the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County also plans to screen a film at one of the events in connection with Ohio Goes to the Movies, screenings of films with connections to Ohio to be held throughout the state in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.
He said the group will be distributing applications for food and craft vendors for Wednesdays in Wintersville at Saturday’s fundraiser and through its Facebook page in the near future.
