Charges filed following police pursuit

WEIRTON — A Bloomingdale man faces several charges after allegedly reaching high speeds while being followed by a state trooper from Weirton to Steubenville.

Gage L. Simmons, 23, of 70 Linda Drive, has been charged by the West Virginia State Police with driving under the influence of alcohol, third-offense driving while suspended, second-offense reckless driving and speeding.

In a criminal complaint filed against him, a West Virginia State Police officer said he used a radar device to measure Simmons driving at 90 miles per hour in a section of U.S. Route 22 posted as 60 miles per hour at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The state trooper said he activated his siren and lights as he followed Simmons to the Veterans Memorial Bridge and observed him weaving in and out of lanes, without signaling and while in excess of 100 miles per hour.

The officer said when Simmons pulled over near state Route 7, Simmons told him he hadn’t seen him.

The state trooper said Simmons failed field sobriety tests.

The case against Simmons is pending in Brooke County Magistrate Court.
