Fallen tree causes collisions
WELLSBURG — A large tree that fell across the westbound lane of state Route 27 late Saturday resulted in collisions that destroyed two vehicles.
The Brooke County Sheriff’s Department confirmed a passenger in one of the vehicles was transported by the Brooke County Ambulance Service to a local hospital for observation.
Crews with the West Virginia Division of Highways were called to remove the tree, which fell between the Wellsburg Church of Christ and state Route 2.
The Wellsburg and Franklin Community fire departments were dispatched to the scene.
Special council meeting called
FOLLANSBEE — Follansbee Council will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday to meet with leaders of the Follansbee Baseball Association to discuss the 2026 season.
City officials are considering building a new fire station on the current site of the Pony League ball field behind the former Walgreen’s store.
Sobriety checkpoint set in Follansbee
FOLLANSBEE — The West Virginia State Police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint along state Route 2 near Mahan Lane, beginning at 8 p.m. Friday.
The checkpoint is scheduled to conclude at midnight. Motorists wishing to avoid traveling through the checkpoint can bypass it using Mahan Lane if heading south, or Mark Avenue or Allegheny Street heading north.
