Hancock school board meeting set to include financial reports
NEW CUMBERLAND — Pending any issues because of the weather, the first meeting of the Hancock County Board of Education since the district was taken over by the state is set for Monday evening.
The meeting is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center, with an agenda approved under the authority of West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Michele Blatt.
Included as part of the agenda, under the area of finance, is a scheduled presentation from Uriah Cummings, school financial operations officer for the West Virginia Department of Education, and Jeff Davis of Education Consulting Team LLC.
The focus will be on “the financial statements on the following topics: Hancock BOE Financial Template 2025, Hancock County BOE 2025 MDA, Hancock County BOE notes to the 2025, SPW Fund 61 FY25 Hancock, Encumbrances FY 25 Hancock.”
Cummings has been at the lead of the financial reviews of Hancock County Schools at the state level, having previously addressed the board and members of the public during the local board’s Dec. 1 regular meeting.
Davis, meanwhile, was contracted by the Hancock board in early October and tasked with performing a thorough review of the school district’s financial records for the current 2025-2026 school year, as well as the 2024-2025 school year and others, in an effort to better project finances moving forward.
The West Virginia Board of Education voted Jan. 16 to intervene in the operations of Hancock County Schools, following months of financial concerns in the school district, including two instances where local officials requested assistance to meet employee payroll obligations.
The decision included the termination of Dan Enich as the county superintendent of schools and Dave Smith as assistant superintendent, while limiting the authority of the Hancock County Board of Education.
In addition to the regular meeting, the first of two required public hearings concerning plans for the 2026-2027 school year calendar also will be held.
The hearing is set for 5 p.m., also at the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center.
