CHARLESTON — West Virginia State Parks officials are inviting residents and visitors to kick off the new year at one of 22 state parks and forests hosting First Day Hikes on Jan. 1.

The free, guided hikes are part of a nationwide initiative to bring people together to connect with nature, explore park trails and start the year with fresh air and exercise.

“These annual hikes are one of our favorite traditions because they bring people together to enjoy West Virginia’s natural beauty,” said Dillard Price, the acting chief of West Virginia State Parks. “Whether you’re setting a new fitness goal or simply want to experience our parks in a different season, First Day Hikes offer a fun and refreshing way to begin the year.”

Locally, Tomlinson Run State Park will be among those hosting a First Day Hike, with participants asked to meet at the trail head parking lot for the Judy Hulka Trail. The hike will begin at 1 p.m., following the trail from the parking lot to the Almost Heaven swing and back.

The length of the hike is approximately one mile.

Hikers are reminded to dress for the weather, and encouraged to bring water and snacks.

Other parks and forests taking part in this year’s First Day Hikes include Audra, Beech Fork, Blackwater Falls, Bluestone, Cacapon, Canaan Valley Resort, Cass Scenic Railroad, Cedar Creek, Elk River Trail, Little Beaver, Lost River, North Bend, Pipestem Resort, Tu-Endie-Wei, Twin Falls Resort, Tygart Lake, Valley Falls and Watoga state parks, and Coopers Rock, Kanawha and Panther state forests.
