Weirton police warn residents of potential scam
WEIRTON — The Weirton Police Department has issued a warning for residents after receiving reports of an alleged scam targeting the region.
According to information provided by Police Chief Charlie Kush, the scam involves individuals claiming to be federal law enforcement agents contacting individuals by phone and claiming their personal information has been compromised.
Individuals being targeted are encouraged to withdraw money from their bank and use it to purchase gold, then claim the government can protect the gold if the individuals transfer it to the scammers.
Arrangements then are made to send someone to the target’s residence to pick up the gold.
Weirton Police warn the individuals taking part in the scam email their targets false documentation depicting federal judges and federal employees in an effort to make their attempt appear legitimate. They also use federal law enforcement identifications.
Those who believe they may have been targeted by these efforts are encouraged to call the police.
