Weirton Police announce results from sobriety checkpoint
WEIRTON — Three arrests were made, and 19 citations were issued as part of a sobriety checkpoint conducted prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.
The Weirton Police Department, in conjunction with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and the Commission on Drunk Driving Prevention, operated the checkpoint on Penco Road Nov. 26.
Of 223 vehicles which passed through the checkpoint, officers report the arrest of one individual on a driving under the influence charge, noting it was the second such offense for the individual. There also were two arrests for reckless driving and one arrest for driving with a suspended license for DUI.
In addition, 19 citations were issued for a variety of other violations, according to officials.
Officials noted there was a high number of sober designated drivers who went through the checkpoint, noting encouragement at those who chose to drive responsibly.
