A utility pole at the northeast corner of North Fifth and Dock streets was sheared by a pickup truck that struck it and a vacant building at 328 N. Fifth St. at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police said the driver — James Callas, 61, of 2651 Alvarado Blvd. — suffered a minor injury as a result of the accident, while his vehicle sustained heavy front end damage. Police said Callas, who was cited for failure to control, told them he was southbound on North Fifth Street when he swerved to miss a vehicle that had failed to stop at a stop sign on Dock Street. The intersection was closed Tuesday afternoon while crews with American Electric Power tended to the pole. The Steubenville Fire Department also responded to the accident.
