New Cumberland continues work on eyesore properties
NEW CUMBERLAND — City officials are continuing their efforts to address what they consider to be eyesore properties.
During Monday’s meeting of New Cumberland Council, City Solicitor Kevin Pearl provided an update on one property, located on Commerce Street, being eyed for demolition by the city, but noted there remain some obstacles in the way.
“We’ve done the work necessary to see who needs notified,” Pearl said, referring to the process of contacting any property owners, heirs or others who might have an interest in the property.
Under city code, officials begin an investigation of a property following receipt of a complaint. If violations are found, notification is sent to the owner listing those violations, with a hearing scheduled.
“It’s a lot more complex than I was hoping,” he said, explaining there were issues including incomplete tax sale records and multiple parties with connections to the property which could complicate identifying the individuals responsible for its care.
The city’s nuisance regulations also call for officials to take the case through the court system to have it declared as a nuisance property before the city can begin a demolition in the event nothing is done by property owners.
Council also continued discussion Monday on a proposal to refurbish an existing well as part of its public drinking water system.
The status of Well 1B has been up for discussion for several months, with officials looking at either refurbishing the existing well or establishing a new ell.
“We had a camera put down there,” Mayor Will White said, explaining officials are still waiting on some information before making a decision.
City Clerk Tammy Jenkins, though, reminded council American Rescue Plan Act funds are tied into the project, and must be used by the end of the year.
In other water-related business, council appointed Councilman Christian Thaman to the city’s Water/Sewer Board, where he also will serve as co-chairman. Councilman Mike Watkins also will serve as co-chair of the board, while Councilmember Missy Perkins will also be a board member.
The board will next meet at 4:30 p.m., Dec. 1
