STEUBENVILLE — With vendors in the Downtown Steubenville Farmers Market seeing the fruits of their labors, visitors to the weekly sale are finding a wide assortment of produce available there.

Held by Historic Fort Steuben, the market will continue to be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each through October and, pending weather and participation, could continue into November, said organizers.

Last year’s market closed on Nov. 11.

In recent weeks, tables along South Fourth Street have been filled with tomatoes, corn, green beans, eggplant, radishes, multiple varieties of peppers, apples and peaches, among other fruit and vegetables.

There also are local vendors selling jams, jellies, apple butter, Bundt cakes, banana and zucchini bread and other home-made food.

Zach Devitt, owner of Seldom Seen Farm and Forage of Carrollton, has been selling and taking orders for various cuts of grass-fed and traditional beef and lamb.

“We say the only people who don’t stop by are the ones who haven’t tried it,” said Devitt.

He said in addition to common cuts of meat, he has taken orders for liver, heart, tongue and tail, the latter used in an Italian stew that’s a family favorite for some local households.

Dating to 1918, the family farm sold meat, milk and produce to wholesalers for many years but more recently has focused on direct-to-consumer sales in response to a demand for meat and poultry raised in a local, ecologically conscious setting.

The relatively new market has led the farm to sell its product in Steubenville and at other area farmers markets, said Devitt, who is aided on the farm by his father, Daniel, and other family members.

Among many other vendors on hand were Paul and Cathy Russell of Russell’s Produce of Wellsville.

“We’ve been coming to the Steubenville market for about 45 years,” said Paul, as he set out fresh tomatoes and other produce with the help of his daughter, Emily.

His wife, Cathy, said they have five greenhouses on their farm and usually start planting in late April.

One of nine children, she and her siblings helped with a smaller family garden but it was when she married Paul that she became a bona fide farmer.

Among the market’s many regular customers is June Crago of Steubenville, who said, “I come every chance I get. It (the food) is always what you want it to taste like when you get it home.”

The Downtown Steubenville Farmers Market has a Facebook page, on which are posted many photos of the local product sold there, but organizers encourage everyone to stop down and see for themselves.
