BLOOMINGDALE — The walls are up on the latest modular home project at Jefferson County Joint Vocational School as carpentry students put their training to use.

Program instructor Dave Lucas said the structure — which is the school’s fourth such project and his second — began last winter.

“We began working on it in December and put up the floor system,” he said, adding that the modular spans some 1,500 square feet.

Since then, the exterior walls and roof were erected, and students most recently built the interior walls. Once complete, it will feature three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, A dining area and kitchen as well as a walk-in closet and laundry room.

“We’ve added interior walls, then we’ll add the windows, roof and siding,” he said. “We will have a structural inspection, possibly in the spring.”

Lucas’ students have handled the construction while pupils in the electrical trades program will participate, plus a certified professional will conduct the HVAC installation and an independent contractor will complete the plumbing. He said the project was a thrill for his students because they get to put their knowledge to work and create something for the community.

“They started from the ground up and are learning a lot.”

Plans are to put the structure up for sale following completion, but no date has yet been set.
