Literacy promoted

Steubenville City Council Tuesday adopted a proclamation in recognition of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week at the request of the Jefferson County Educational Service Center. With Mayor Jerry Barilla and bearing the proclamation are Karla Gregory Martin, left, executive director of the Aspire adult basic education and literacy program at the center, and Hayden Martin, director of curriculum and training. The proclamation states it’s estimated that more than 43 million Americans can’t read or write at a basic level while 62.7 million lack basic math skills and there’s a shortfall of 7.5 million workers in the private sector across all skill levels. It notes organizations such as the JCESC are working to address the problem.
