154th-annual Jefferson County Fair livestock sale raises more than half a million dollars

- Grand champion market hog — Amanda Boring, an independent exhibitor, raised the grand champion in the category of market hogs. The purchaser of the hog was Water Transport
- Grand champion market lamb — Gunar Tustin, an independent exhibitor, raised the grand champion market lamb, which was was purchased by Wintersville Veterinary Clinic.
- Grand champion market chickens — Sydnee Kirkpatrick, an independent exhibitor, raised the grand champion market chickens, which was purchased by Limitless Pool and Spa.
- Grand champion market steer — Brayden McConnell of the Wildwood Critters 4-H Club raised the grand champion market steer, which was purchased by Team Ford Automotive of Steubenville.

SMITHFIELD — Members of 4-H Clubs and independent exhibitors were among the competitors who showed their animals before judges during this year’s 154th-annual Jefferson County Fair.
One of the largest spectator events at the fair was the Junior Livestock Sale, held Aug. 16, in which this year’s winners had their prize-winning animals purchased by area businesses and residents.
This year’s sales totaled $567,983, according to Angie Allison, 4-H youth development educator for the Ohio State University Extension office. There was a total of 318 lots.
Seven lots comprised the dairy beef feeders, and the grand champion was Kendall Barker of the Buckeye Variety 4-H Club. Barker received a bid of $5 per pound at 700 pounds. The buyer was DeNoon Lumber.
The reserve champion for dairy beef feeder was Shane Griffith of Windy Ridge 4-H Club, who received a bid of $5 per pound at 551pounds, with the buyer being Hidden Hollow Farms.

Grand champion dairy beef steer -- Grace Browning, an independent exhibitor, raised the grand champion dairy beef steer, which was purchased by Murrays Restaurant of Wintersville
Three lots made up market dairy steers, with the grand champion being Grace Browning, an independent exhibitor. Purchased for $3.50 per pound at a weight of 1,490 pounds, the buyer was Murrays Restaurant of Wintersville.
The reserve champion for market dairy steer was raised by Luka Petric of Town and Country 4-H Club. Petric received a bid of $3.50 per pound at a weight of 1,492 pounds, and the steer was purchased by Saiter Farms.
There were 26 lots which made up market beef steers, according to Allison, who noted the grand champion market steer owner was Brayden McConnell from the Wildwood Critters 4-H Club. McConnell’s steer was purchased for $7.25 per pound, at a weight of 1,358 pounds, and sold to Team Ford Automotive in Steubenville. The reserve champion for market steer was Caroline Rinkes from the Windy Ridge 4-H Club. Her steer sold for $6 per pound at a weight of 1,356 pounds and was purchased by D&J Sales and Service.
The grand champion for the title of Jefferson County Best Bred went to Carly Long, an independent exhibitor, who received a bid of $4.50 per pound at a weight of 1,220 pounds. The purchaser was Kimble Cos. The reserve champion for Jefferson County Best Bred also went to Long, with a bid of $4 per pound at 1,512 pounds and sold to Hidden Hollow Farms. In the 27 lots for market chickens, the grand champion for the pen of three market chickens went to Sydnee Kirkpatrick, an independent exhibitor. Kirkpatrick received a bid of $1,000 for her pen, which was sold to Limitless Pool and Spa. The reserve champion for their pen of three market chickens went to Adalyn Stackhouse of the Steubenville City Seedlings 4-H Club. Stackhouse received a bid of $800 for the pen, which was purchased by Williams Energy.
There were 19 lots for market ducks this year. In the category of pen of two market ducks, the grand champion was Regan Wilson of Town and Country 4-H Club, whose pen sold for $1,400 and purchased by Cardinal Sales and Service.

The reserve champion for the pen of two market ducks also went to Wilson, who received a bid of $700 for the pen, which was purchased by Williams Energy.
There were six lots in the category of market goose. The grand champion for a pen of two market geese went to Johanna George of the Town and Country 4-H Club. George received a bid of $1,100 for the pen at a weight of 12 pounds and the pen was purchased by Williams Energy.
Cardinal Sales and Service purchased reserve champion Johanna George’s pen of two market geese at a bid of $700 for the pen at a weight of 12 pounds. George is a member of Town and Country 4-H Club.
Twelve lots made up the market turkeys category, with this year’s grand champion being Colten McAtee from the 4-H Varieties Club. Coming in with a bid of $2,200 at a weight of 29 pounds, the buyer was Barbara Bradley.
The reserve champion for market turkeys was Karley Starr of the Happy Hooves and Fancy Feathers 4-H Club. Starr received a bid of $1,600 at a weight of 24 pounds, and the winning bid came from Buckeye Mechanical Contracting.

There were 15 lots in the category of market rabbits this year. Grand champion for market rabbits was Lane Keyoski of the Banners and Buckles 4-H Club. Keyoski received a bid of $1,050 for the pen that was purchased by Bonecutter Drilling. The reserve champion for market rabbits was Lainey Thompson of the Happy Hooves and Fancy Feathers 4-H Club. Thompson received a bid of $700 for the pen that was purchased by Williams Energy.
In the category of market goats, there were 30 lots. This year’s grand champion was Brynlee Van Fossen of the 43 Ramblers, who received a bid of $4,100 at a weight of 84 pounds. The buyer was the Wintersville Veterinary Clinic.
Reserve champion in the market goat category was Declan McConnell of the 43 Ramblers, who received a bid of $2,100 at a weight of 97 pounds. The purchaser was Diamond Specialized Inc.
In the category of market lambs, there were 17 lots at this year’s fair.
The grand champion for market lamb was Gunar Tustin, an independent exhibitor. Tustin received a bid of $13.50 per pound at a weight of 155 pounds. The buyer was Wintersville Veterinary Clinic. Reserve champion for market lamb was Kaitlynn Merkel of the Country Rangers 4-H Club. Merkel received a bid of $12.50 per pound at a weight of 130 pounds. The buyer was Kris Haught, attorney at law.

In the category of market hogs, there were 152 lots this year. The grand champion in the market hog category was Amanda Boring, an independent exhibitor, who received a bid of $26 per pound at 301 pounds. The buyer was Water Transport. Reserve champion in market hog category was Connor Best of the Free Spirits 4-H Club, who received a bid of $13 per pound at a weight of 270 pounds. The buyer was Tri-State Financial Services.
In the category of heifer feeder calves, there was one lot at the cost of $4.50 per pound.
In the category of steer feeder calves, there was one lot at the cost of $4.25 per pound.
