Twelve-year-old killed in ATV crash

FREEPORT TOWNSHIP — The Steubenville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash of an all-terrain vehicle Saturday afternoon that resulted in the death of 12-year-old Ana Zarkovic.

Officials with the highway patrol said she was driving the vehicle on Old Smyrna Road near state Route 800 when it veered off the road, striking a ditch, and overturning onto the roadway.

They said unsafe speed was a factor in the accident, which also resulted in minor injuries to a 14-year-old passenger from Hopedale who was treated at the scene.

Also responding to the accident were the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department and several volunteer fire departments.

Zarkovic was a seventh-grader at Harrison Central High School, where students have been encouraged to wear pink today in her honor.

Harrison Hills City Schools Superintendent Duran Morgan released a statement, saying, “Ana was a bright light in our community and an active member of our junior high cheerleading program. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family, friends, teammates, and all who loved her,” said Duran Morgan, superintendent of the Harrison Hills City School District in a statement.

Morgan said counseling is available to students and staff through the school’s guidance office or by texting 988 to a 24-hour crisis hotline.
