SMITHFIELD — The Special Olympics Unified Livestock Show is getting ready for a second year of inclusive fun at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on Saturday.
Events take place at 5 p.m. in the Gary W. Cain Livestock Arena at Friendship Park in Smithfield and are provided with support from Special Olympics Unified Sports, the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Jefferson County 4-H. Thirteen exhibitors with intellectual or developmental disabilities are matched with mentors representing 4-H and FFA organizations while countless volunteers will be on hand.
Edison High School sophomore Amelia “Mimi” Ault is organizing the event and said the purpose is to give individuals an opportunity to shine while showcasing animals, plus banners and ribbons will be awarded. The show itself is open to the public.
“We will start the day off with a clinic where exhibitors learn to care for and connect with the animals. The clinic includes mini-horse, duck and dog. Then the livestock show will start at approximately 5 p.m.,” Ault said. “This is open to anyone who would like to show their support. We end the night with a square dance for all.”
The show has increased since its inaugural event last year, which included a total of 16 exhibitors and mentors. This year includes some exciting additions with the square dance and a crowning of the SOULS King and Queen, plus the junior fair board will be involved with a concession stand. Ault added that new speakers, judges and a singer are scheduled to participate, with Carl Glenn as master of ceremonies and a program is set for the day. She was ecstatic about holding another show, saying it fosters inclusion, confidence and a community connection.
“I am absolutely thrilled about the event-even more than last year. With more exhibitors, animals, mentors, helpers and new activities, Saturday will be an unforgettable day!”
She also thanked Ohio State University 4-H Youth Development Extension Educator Angie Allison for her assistance and the county fair board for providing the venue, noting that the concession stand provided by the county fair board and junior fair board will feature hot dogs, chips and drinks. Ault was also grateful to Jeffco Services Inc. for again sponsoring the SOULS show.
The daughter of Tom and Anna Ault of East Springfield, she was inspired by her sister, Olivia, who has cognitive and developmental disabilities. They share a love of animals and Ault wanted to offer more inclusion in 4-H activities. Since it began, SOULS has gained participation from students at Edison, Buckeye Local, Indian Creek, Jefferson County Joint Vocational, McKinley STEM Academy, Harrison Central, Weir and Brooke high schools.
“I am thankful for the outpouring of support to make the show grow beyond my imagination,” she said.
