Hotel mold progress is noted

STEUBENVILLE — Health district officials report the Wingate by Wyndham hotel on University Boulevard has made significant progress addressing mold and structural issues uncovered in a site inspection last month by the state fire marshal.

Jefferson County Health District Commissioner Andrew Henry issued the update Tuesday, reporting the hotel had “provided (them) with pre- and post-mold remediation test results.

“The post mold remediation reports indicated food safe test results,” Henry said. “Upon inspection on Monday, the breakfast area at the Wingate Hotel of Steubenville was reopened to guests by the JCGHD.”

The pool area, however, “remains closed at this time,” he said, pointing out it “has been closed for quite a while but it’s not ready to reopen.”

He conceded the results could be described as a mixed bag, “but we are pleased with the attention to the matter and progress.”

“A number of rooms were on the post-mold remediation report, so I know they’re making progress in the rooms.”

The fire marshal, empowered by Ohio Revised Code to ensure hotels meet health and safety standards, had ordered Wingate’s management to address the concerns after touring the facility July 8 with city building inspectors and health department personnel. Afterward, the fire marshal had ordered Wingate’s management to commission “a third-party mold assessment, somebody not attached to Wingate in any fashion” to assess conditions in the hotel. Henry had said the hotel was required to do mold and structural assessments.

Guest complaints had initially brought the problems to the health board’s attention.
