Weirton sets annual controlled bow hunt dates
WEIRTON — The dates for Weirton’s annual controlled bow hunt have been set.
The hunt will take place from Sept. 6 to Dec. 31, with an extended season planned for Jan. 13 to Jan. 31.
In order to participate, an individual must have lived in either Hancock or Brooke counties for at least the past six months.
All hunters planning to participate must attend one of three scheduled pre-hunt meetings, to be held in the Weirton Room of the Millsop Community Center. Pre-hunt meetings will be held at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Aug. 6, and at 10 a.m. Aug. 16.
There will be a $20 registration fee to participate in the hunt — except for youth hunters under the age of 18 at the time of registration — with the fee to be paid at the pre-hunt meeting.
In addition, hunters must have a valid yellow National Bowhunter Education Foundation card, even if you have previously taken part in the controlled bow hunt, and a valid photo identification. If a replacement NBEF card is needed, contact Larry Lawson at (304) 437-3303.
The meetings will begin at their scheduled times, with doors closed and no one admitted after.
During the meetings, revised regulations governing the hunt will be distributed, along with hunting permits, maps of the designated hunting areas, and other necessary documents.
A Bow Hunt Education Safety Course will be held at 9 a.m. Aug. 9, at Shelter 1 of Marland Heights Park. A $25 fee is required to participate in the safety course, and pre-registration is required by calling the Department of Natural Resources Office at (304) 825-6787.
Space in the class is limited.
