Soil, water election slated for Jefferson County

STEUBENVILLE — An election of supervisors of the Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District to be held in accordance with Chapter 940 of the Ohio Revised Code, the Ohio Soil and Water Conservation Commission has announced.

Five Jefferson County residents serve as supervisors on the Jefferson board. Each supervisor serves a three-year term and can run for re-election at the end of their term.

The board guides the district in addressing management and conservation of soil, water and natural resources in the county. Duties of the locally led board include identifying local natural resources conservation needs and developing and implementing plans and programs to meet those needs; providing education and information on natural resources conservation; and coordinating assistance and funding from federal, state and local government, associations, and private groups.

Any resident of Jefferson County who is 18 years of age or older can self-nominate to have their name appear on the ballot for the 2025 special election to be held Sept. 28 through Oct. 27. Candidate nomination petitions are available for pick-up at the Jefferson SWCD office located at 500 Market St., Mezzanine Level – Suite 4, Steubenville, Ohio 43952. Interested petition candidates can call the office at (740) 264-9790.

Potential candidates need to secure at least 10 signatures from Jefferson County landowners or occupiers at least 18 years of age and submit the petition to the district by 4:30 p.m. Aug. 22.
