Juvenile female drowns in Ohio River

WEIRTON — A 13-year-old girl from Burgettstown is dead after drowning in the Ohio River near the Veterans Memorial Bridge Monday evening.

According to the Weirton Police Department, the Brooke County 911 Center received a call at 6:55 p.m. Monday concerning the juvenile swimming in the river and being swept away by the current. She had been swimming with family members near the bridge, reports indicate.

Weirton Police Patrolman Adam Mortimer arrived at the scene within minutes of the call, entering the water and bringing her back to the shore, where life-saving measures were taken before transporting her to WVU Weirton Medical Center where she succumbed.

In addition to the Weirton Police Department, the Weirton Fire Department and Hancock County Ambulance Service responded.

Wintersville Council meeting moved

WINTERSVILLE — Wintersville Council’s next regular meeting has been moved from Thursday to 7 p.m. July 10 at the Village Building.

Library board to meet

STEUBENVILLE — The board of trustees for the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County will hold its monthly meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Main Library, 407 S. Fourth St.

Anyone who would like to address board members during the public comment period can visit or call (740) 282-9782 the Main Library to sign up by noon Monday.

Recovery board committee to meet

STEUBENVILLE — The personnel committee of the Jefferson County Prevention and Recovery Board will meet at 5 p.m. Monday.

The meeting will be held at the board office, 524 Madison Ave.

Ross Township meetings set

IRONDALE — The Ross Township Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. July 12 in special session to discuss and adopt the 2026 township budget.

The trustees will hold a regular meeting at 7 p.m. July 28. Both meetings will take place at the township garage, 6172 county Road 54, Irondale.
