Brooke High School Class of 2025 announced

WELLSBURG — Commencement for Brooke High School was held Thursday.

Top students in the Class of 2025 are valedictorian Lyla Horvath, salutatorian Payton Adler, Alaina Horvath, Ruari Stoll, Hailey Buterbaugh, Emilee McKinney, Jania Jones, Evan Urso, Taylor Powell and Jerri Wilson.

The daughter of Holly and Matthew Horvath of Weirton, Lyla Horvath was a completer of the biomedical science program and honors student named to the National Honors Society, of which she was president; National Technical Honors Society, Bruins Best and West Virginia Girls State, serving as secretary-treasurer; and received the gold, silver and bronze academic achievement pins.

She was a four-year letterer in soccer and four-year letterer and captain of the swim team, which won one state championship and two regional championships, while she broke two school records.

She served as class president and on the OVAC varsity board, was in HOSA, DECA, FBLA and the Key Club; participated in the Weirton Chamber of Commerce’s Youth Leadership program and was a volunteer coach for the Follansbee Swim Team.

The daughter of Jennifer and Seth Adler of Wellsburg, Adler was an honors student and completer of the biomedical science program; was named to the National Honors Society, principal’s honor all four years, West Virginia Northern Community College’s dean’s list and Bruins Best.

She was a two-year letterer for tennis, serving as team captain, and track and four-year letterer in soccer.

Adler was vice president of HOSA and a member of the OVAC varsity board, Bruin Leaders, DECA and FBLA. She was named to the homecoming court and worked on the event in various ways and volunteered for many other school events and at St. John Catholic Church, where she is a member.

The daughter of John and Kelly Horvath of Wellsburg, Alaina Horvath was an honors student named to the National Honor Society, for which she was treasurer; National Technical Honor Society, principal’s honor roll and Bruins Best and received the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission’s Academic Achievement Award and the gold, silver and bronze academic achievement awards.

She was a Bruin Leader, treasurer of Educators Rising and the Key Club and member of FBLA, HOSA, DECA and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

A varsity cheerleader, she helped her squad to earn one state championship and three regional championships and was named DeeJay’s Athlete of the Week and Impact Player of the Week.

She was a volunteer cheering coach for Universe Athletics.

The daughter of Sean and Dana Stoll of Colliers, Stoll was an honors student named to the National Honors Society, National Technical Honors Society and Bruins Best, and received the gold, silver and bronze academic achievement pins.

She was in the dance team, madrigal choir, drama club, FBLA, HOSA and Bruin Leaders.

Stoll organized the Future Bruin Dance Camp for her senior honors project and volunteered at Colliers United Methodist Church, where she is a member.

The daughter of Michelle and Aaron Buterbaugh of Weirton, Buterbaugh was a completer of the biomedical science program and honors student named to the National Honors Society, of which she was vice president, National Technical Honors Society, of which she was president; and all four years to the honor roll.

She was named the Philanthropic Educational Organization’s Star Scholar, received academic honors from WVNCC, was named to Girls State, where she served as a party chair; and received the gold, silver and bronze academic achievement pins.

Buterbaugh was a four-year member and captain of the soccer team, varsity swim team manager, varsity track team member and athletic honors for her or her soccer team included Impact Player of the Week, Most Valuable Player, OVAC Honorable Mention, WVSSAC Second Team All-Region and OVAC All-Star Varsity.

She was class recording secretary all four years, participated in the Weirton Chamber’s Youth Leadership program, served as a volunteer coach for the Brooke County Soccer Club and was a member of DECA, serving as president; FBLA, serving as membership officer; the Key Club, serving as secretary; HOSA and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The daughter of Stephanie and Gary McKinney of Follansbee, McKinney was an honors student and completer of the biomedical science program.

She was named to the National Honors Society, principal’s honor roll all four years and WVNCC dean’s list and received the gold, silver and bronze academic achievement pins.

McKinney was a four-year letterer in softball, with 100 career hits; was in a travel softball league for eight year and was in DECA, of which she was vice president; HOSA, FBLA, the yearbook staff and Bruin Leaders.

She volunteered for many school events, the Wellsburg Applefest and Salvation Army and organized a four-day softball camp for ages 7-15 for her senior honors project.

The daughter of Tonya Salvini of Wellsburg and Duke Jones of Steubenville, Jones was an honors student and completer of the biomedical science program.

She was named to the National Honors Society, National Technical Honors Society, principal’s honor roll, the West Virginia Northern Community College president’s list, the Judicial Scholars program and Bruins Best.

She was in FBLA and DECA, serving as historian of the former, and was a top winner at state conferences held by both groups.

Jones was a three-year letterer in soccer, one-year letterer in tennis and and two-year member of the basketball team; homecoming princess, a Bruin Leader, and member of Health Occupations Students of America and the concert choir.

She put in 100 shadowing hours at Weirton Medical Center, where she served as a patient care technician; and volunteered for the Salvation Army and at various school events.

The son of Frank and Holly Urso of Follansbee, Urso was an honors student named to the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Bruisn Best and received the gold, silver and bronze academic achievement pins.

He was a four-year letterer and team captain in soccer, a two-year letterer and four-year member of the basketball team and one-year letterer in tennis.

Urso was a member of FBLA and the Spanish Club, a Bruin Leader and volunteered for the Salvation Army, Wellsburg Applefest and various school activities.

For his senior honors project, he collected donations and assembled items for care packages for patients at Trinity Health System’s Tony Teramana Cancer Center.

The daughter of Jamie Truex of Colliers, Powell was an honors student named to the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, West Virginia Girls State and the Judicial Scholars program and received the gold, silver and bronze academic achievement pins.

She was a member of HOSA, DECA and FBLA and volunteered for Woodland Hills Nursing Home and the Salvation Army.

The daughter of Jessica and Justin Utt and Jason Wilson, Wilson was named to the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society and received the West Virginia P.R.O.M.I.S.E. Scholarship.

She was in the drama club and Skills USA, lettered in the madrigal choir and was named to All-state Choir.
