Hancock County sheriff releases details on Monday shooting incident
NEW CUMBERLAND — Hancock County Sheriff Scott Gittings still has not released the name of an elderly gentleman who was found dead Monday afternoon, but he did release more information regarding a brief stay-in-place incident around the Wildfire Drive area near Chapman Road.
Shortly after 1:28 p.m., the Hancock County 911 center received a call from a female subject reporting her elderly grandfather had chased her grandmother in the house and was firing shots at her.
Her grandmother collapsed after entering the home and was unresponsive, but three women had blocked the doors to prevent her grandfather from re-entering the home, reports said.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, West Virginia State and New Cumberland police responded to the call.
Upon arrival, officers said, the suspect’s whereabouts were unknown.
After getting the women evacuated and medical attention if needed, officers concentrated on tracking the suspect.
After identifying the last area where the suspect was seen, a drone, a K-9 officer and the special response team were brought in to assist.
Gittings would eventually post a note to the sheriff’s official page extending the search area to between Wylie Ridge and Cameron Hollow roads.
The suspect was eventually found deceased in the woods 150 yards behind the house, having apparently suffering an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound from the 9mm semi-automatic handgun found in the suspect’s possession,
Chester and Weirton police provided assistance.
