Two sentenced in Jefferson County court

STEUBENVILLE — Two men were sentenced recently in Jefferson County Common Pleas County after pleading guilty to drug charges.

County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin reported:

• Devin Smith, 28, 544 Highland Ave., Steubenville, will serve up to four-and-a-half years in prison, three of them mandatory, on each of the three charges he pleaded guilty to — possession of a fentanyl-related compound, possession of cocaine and aggravated possession of drugs. Smith also was ordered by Common Pleas Judge Joseph Bruzzese to forfeit $3,126 deemed to be proceeds from the illegal drug activity and will be prohibited from having or possessing guns for the rest of his life. Following his release from prison Smith will be put under community control.

• Lovell Johnson, 28, 428 Clinton Ave., Steubenville, was sentenced by Bruzzese to concurrent five-year terms under community control after pleading guilty to aggravated possession of drugs and possession of cocaine. The first six months of Johnson’s community control will be served at Eastern Ohio Correctional Center. He also must forfeit $3,050 seized at the time of his arrest.

Judge Michelle Miller, meanwhile, denied a request by Cherie Renee Nelson, 55, for a bond reduction.

Nelson, 616 Lawson Ave., Steubenville, has been held in the Jefferson County jail since her Oct. 15 arrest on a $1 million bail set by Steubenville Municipal Court Judge John Mascio.

According to her indictment, Nelson had in excess of 100 grams of cocaine in her possession when she was taken into custody. Authorities also are seeking major drug offender and firearm specifications against Nelson and are asking the court to order her to forfeit her home, a 1997 Jeep Wrangler and $1,430 in cash, deemed to be proceeds of the alleged illegal drug trafficking.

Nelson requested her bond be lowered and house arrest, arguing unsuccessfully she is a single mother of three, one of them a juvenile for whom she said she is the sole caretaker.

Her trial is set for March 24.
