NEW CUMBERLAND -- West Virginia residents affected by storms which swept through the area April 11-12 have a new option to see if they are eligible for assistance.

Staff and volunteers with the Federal Emergency Management Agency have opened a disaster recovery center in Hancock County, located at the former offices of the Hancock County Health Department behind the county courthouse.

"We like to call it one-stop shopping," Nate Custer, media relations specialist with FEMA, explained, noting staff with FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration are on hand to help residents review and register their claims. "They can come here and have their questions answered."

The DRC will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Those who already have received a letter from FEMA in relation to damage from those storms can visit the center to learn about their next steps, with staff helping to submit any additional information or supporting documentation needed to continue their application process.

Those who haven't received anything also can register to check on their eligibility.

"We can individually look at their cases," noted Staff Manager Patricia Lord. "We're accessible. We're full service."

Lord explained, even if a resident's insurance coverage has provided some compensation for damage, FEMA and the SBA might be able to find additional assistance.

Glenda Lee Rodriguez, public affairs specialist for SBA, explained while FEMA can offer compensation through grants, SBA provides options for low-interest loans for businesses, as well as homeowners, renters and non-profits.

"The people have many choices," she said.

In the coming weeks, Custer explained, two-person teams from FEMA will be going door-to-door to check on potential claims in the area from the storms, providing an additional avenue for those looking to register.

"They can register people on the spot," Custer said, noting the teams would be carrying identification.

The deadline to register for assistance as a result of the April 11-12 storms is Sept. 3.
