STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County Democratic Party held its elections Thursday night and elected two new individuals to officer positions while two others remained as officers. By unanimous vote for all the candidates, Eddie Abdalla was re-elected as chairman; Maureen Howard, who previously served as secretary, was elected as vice chair; Kimberly McCalla was elected as the new secretary; and Wayne Butler was elected as the new treasurer.
They each will serve for a four-year term.
After the meeting, which was held at Eastern Gateway Community College, Abdalla said he was humbled and honored to be re-elected and was looking forward to the party putting forth a qualified candidate to be on the ballot to replace Thomas "Bo" Graham as a Democratic candidate for county commissioner.
Graham accepted the principal position at Catholic Central High School and stepped away from his spot on the ballot for the Jan. 2 seat on the board of commissioners. The party has until Aug. 12 to submit a replacement candidate, Abdalla said.
That person will face Republican Ron “Jake” Kleineke in the Nov. 5 election.
The seat came open when longtime Commissioner Dave Maple, a Republican, announced that he would not seek re-election.
Democrat Todd Mazzaferro will face incumbent Republican Tony Morelli on the Nov. 5 ballot for the Jan. 3 seat.
