STEUBENVILLE -- A downtown resident was stabbed Thursday and his alleged assailant taken into custody, along with two others who were picked up on warrants.
Police charged Sol Rose, 56, 414 N. Sixth Street, Apt. 2, with feloniously assaulting the victim, who was taken to Trinity Medical Center West for treatment after police found him on a porch in the 400 block of North Seventh Street, bleeding from his hand and shoulder.
Brian C. Digman, 38, 423 N. Seventh St., was later taken into custody on a Municipal Court warrant for misdemeanor theft, while Rose’s female companion, Lamontea Whatley, 31, 414 N. Sixth Street, was served with a warrant for failure to appear.
A neighbor told police Rose and a female companion had been “harassing and assaulting” her and Digman for weeks and on that day “got into an altercation,” later describing the weapon used in the assault as “an ice pick” that she said Rose kept in his waistband.
Police said Digman was aware of his warrant and had already left the residence, but when they located him later told them he was inside the North Seventh Street residence when Whatley started “yelling and disturbing him while he was on the phone.”
He claimed when he “screamed” for her to be quiet, “Rose became upset and came at him,” at which point the victim “stood up to defend himself (and) was subsequently stabbed,” police said.
Police said when they initially interviewed Rose he’d told them Digman and his female companion had “disrespected” Whatley but denied stabbing him, claiming that when Digman refused to apologize they’d left. Whatley also denied involvement in “any type of physical assault or anything beyond a verbal argument” and blamed Digman for the incident, police said.
