Tax bills being mailed
STEUBENVILLE -- Jefferson County Treasurer Raymond M. Agresta said tax bills for the first half of 2023 are being mailed today, and the last day for payment without penalty will be March 6.
Persons who do not receive a bill in the next several days should contact the county treasurer's office at (740) 283-8572.
Property owners are encouraged to pay by check or money order by mail at P.O. Box 398, Steubenville, OH 43952, or by placing the payment in the drop box located on the alley side of the courthouse.
Payment also can be made by credit and debit cards and e-checks online at Jeffersoncountyoh.com or by calling (877) 690-3729 and using jurisdiction code 4577 (see the back of tax bill for details.) Agresta said CSG Forte Payment System, the service provider, charges a convenience fee for this service.
Agresta encourages those who usually pay with cash to use one of the above options for payment, if possible.
Those who want a receipt must return the entire statement along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Man sentenced for child abuse
WELLSBURG -- A Weirton man has been sentenced to four to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of child abuse causing serious injury.
Lamont Sherrell, 70, of Weirton received the sentence Tuesday through a plea agreement reached by his attorney, Sean Logue; and Brooke County Prosecutor Joseph Barki III.
Per order of 1st Judicial Circuit Court Judge Ronald Wilson, the sentence will be served concurrently with the 1-to-15-year sentence currently being served by Sherrell for a charge of possession of cocaine with intent to deliver.
Barki confirmed charges of strangulation and domestic battery were dismissed through the agreement, which prevented the victim, who is still a minor, from being required to testify in court.
Barki called the victim, who is Sherrell's child, a hero for running away from home and to a local law enforcement agency to bring an end to his abuse. He said the child's mother was deceased and the child was being kept at home on the pretense of being home-schooled.
According to the Brooke County grand jury indictment against Sherrell, he struck the child in the face with a hammer, injuring an eye; attempted to strangle him and hit his hands with a long-handled brush with metal bristles between May 23, 2021, and March 1, 2022.
"He's in a nice, loving environment now," said Barki.
Finance committee to meet
TORONTO -- Toronto Council's finance committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Feb. 7, 14 and 21 to work on the city's 2024 budget.
The meetings will be held at the Toronto Municipal Building.
