WEIRTON -- The filing period for those interested in seeking to be the next mayor of Weirton or a member of its city council is approaching.
The city has scheduled its election filing period for Jan. 8 until noon on Jan. 27. Offices to appear on the ballot are those of the city's mayor and all seven members of City Council.
Weirton will hold its general election on Nov. 5, in conjunction with the national general election. No municipal primary election will be held.
Interested residents may file candidate registration forms with the city clerk's office at 200 Municipal Plaza during regular business hours - 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 20 and Jan. 27.
The filing fee for mayor is $100, and the filing fee for city council members is $50.
For candidate forms being returned by mail to be accepted they must be complete, notarized, accompanied by the correct filing fee and postmarked no later than Jan. 27.
Changes to the municipal election began as a result of charter changes approved by city voters in 2015, adjusting the schedule by adding additional time to the terms of the current mayor and council in order to line up with the national election.
Earlier this year, council approved an ordinance redrawing the boundaries of the city's seven wards to better align with the existing precincts of Hancock and Brooke counties. Voters will make their selections for council based on those new ward boundaries, although they won't go fully into effect until January 2025.
