Republican contests primary race for Jefferson County commissioner

STEUBENVILLE -- After filing on the last possible day to declare, a Bloomingdale resident is contesting the 2024 Republican primary race for the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners seat to be vacated by current Commissioner Dave Maple.

Raymond Freund, 4375 state Route 646, filed on Wednesday to compete in the primary against Ron Kleineke, 399 township Road 373, Richmond, who filed on Sept. 26. Both are seeking to fill Maple's seat, following his decision last month not to run for re-election in 2024.

Running uncontested for Maple's seat on the Democratic side is Thomas E. Graham, 100 Hiddenwood Drive, Steubenville, who served 20 years on the board of commissioners before being defeated in the 2022 election by current commissioner and Republican Eric Timmons.

Running for re-election as a commissioner is Republican Tony Morelli, who has served in that position since 2021. Unopposed on the Republican side, Morelli is challenged in the general election by Democrat Todd M. Mazzaferro, 5636 state Route 646, Bloomingdale, who filed on Monday.

The primary will occur on March 19. Individuals have until Jan. 8 to file and be declared a write-in candidate for the primary. The deadline is March 18 to be declared as an independent.

In the race for prosecuting attorney, the only filed individual is Democrat Jane M. Hanlin, 671 township Road 391, Toronto. In the race for clerk of the court of common pleas, the only filed individual is Republican Andrew D. Plesich, 609 Lauretta Drive, Steubenville.

Filed for the state senator race out of District 30 are Democrat Iva Faber, 23 Meadows Lane, Athens, and Republican Brian Michael Chavez, 114 Pineview Circle, Marietta. Chavez is currently serving the remainder of the term for former state Sen. Frank Hoagland of Mingo Junction.

Rylan Z. Finzer, 25400 Rockside Road, Apt. 124A, Bedford Heights, filed as a Democratic candidate for representative to Congress out of Ohio's Sixth Congressional District. No Republicans filed for the office out of Jefferson County.

Republican Ron Ferguson, 229 Cara Place, Wintersville, is running for re-election as state representative out of District 96. Mary DeGenaro, 30 College St., Poland, filed as a Republican candidate for judge of the Ohio Court of Appeals District 7. No Democrats filed for either office out of Jefferson County.

Republican Scott M. Renforth, 512 Daniels St., Toronto, is the only candidate filed for county recorder. Republican Brian J. Scarpone, 103 N. Avalon Drive., Wintersville, is the only candidate filed for county treasurer. Republican Michael A. Scarpone, 22 Highland Acres, Bloomingdale, is the only candidate filed for coroner.

No candidates from either party filed for sheriff or county engineer.
