STEUBENVILLE -- Jefferson County Board of Elections Director Robert Gale said those who plan to seek office in the March 19 primary election need to keep filing deadlines in mind.
• Petitions: Available for state representative (96th District), two county commission seats, prosecuting attorney, Common Pleas clerk of court, sheriff, county recorder, county treasurer, county engineer and coroner. Forms are also available for spots on the Democratic and Republican county central committees.
The deadline for filing declaration of candidacy petitions and forms and local questions and issues is by 4 p.m. Dec. 20.
The deadline to file as a write-in candidate for the offices listed above is 4 p.m. Jan.8, while the deadline for filing nominating petitions for independent candidates is 4 p.m. March 18.
• Voter registration: If you've moved or changed your name, make sure you update your records. If in doubt, contact the elections office at (740) 283-8522.
The last day to register or update your registration to vote in the primary election is Feb. 20. The board of election's office will be open that day until 9 p.m.
• Absentee request application: Absentee ballot request forms for the primary can be sent or requested beginning Jan. 1. Ballots will be mailed Feb. 21 for any valid absentee request forms received prior to Feb. 20. Early in-person absentee voting will begin Feb. 21.
The deadline for absentee request forms to arrive at the election's office for a mailed ballot is March 12. Requests received after March 12 cannot be accepted, Gale said.
