Steubenville City Council last Tuesday recognized area residents Sandy Rue, her husband Paul, Bill DiPiero and Jack Thornton for their achievements at the National Senior Olympics recently in Pittsburgh. Sandy Rue placed fourth in the 50-meter dash and seventh in the 100-meter dash in the 75-79 age group, and brought home a gold for a first place finish as part of the 70-74 4X100 Relay team with a USA record-setting time of 1:13:77. Paul Rue finished fifth in the discus and ninth in shot put in the 75-79 age group, while Thornton, who has competed in seven national tournaments in the long jump and triple jump and earned his first gold in the triple and a bronze in the long jump at the Pittsburgh competition. DiPiero was a member of Team USA in the European Senior Basketball Association Tournament, defeating Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Lithuania to bring home the gold and was named MVP in the tournament. Second Ward Councilman Tracy McManamon said Ohio placed second in the medal count with a total of 558 medals -- 211 of them gold, 154 of them silver and 193, bronze. — Linda Harris
