Buckeye Local Bash Sunday

CONNORVILLE -- Classroom bells will soon be pealing, and Buckeye Local Schools are marking students' return during the annual Back-to-School Bash Sunday.

Activities are set to be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Buckeye Local Junior-Senior High School and include free school supplies and haircuts, inflatables, vendors and more. Chairperson Susan Nolan, who also serves as principal of Buckeye North Elementary, said festivities will open with a performance by the BLHS Marching Band and then students and their families can obtain school supplies, meet principals, teachers and district staff and simply enjoy the day.

"We have inflatables, a dunk tank, free haircuts, ice cream to buy and about 24 vendors," Nolan said.

Vendors will sell a variety of wares from jewelry to sports cards while the Alpha Delta Kappa educators' sorority will have free books to give away and McDonald's will have a table on hand. Dairy Jean of Adena will have ice cream for sale, area churches will provide goods and kids can line up for free school supplies and backpacks while the junior high will have cinch sacks available. Additions include the sports card vendor and local Boy Scouts. The bash has been held for more than 10 years and focuses on education, health, wellness and safety.

In case of inclement weather, the bash may be moved indoors. Meanwhile, school orientations are being planned at BLHS and BLJHS on Aug. 21 with North, South and West elementary schools conducting open houses on Aug. 22. The first day of school will be Aug. 24.

FirstEnergy upgrading equipment

AKRON -- American Transmission Systems Inc., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., is using helicopters and ground crews to replace more than 550 insulators and attachments along a 35-mile section of a transmission line that runs through Mahoning, Columbiana and Jefferson counties.

The work will help ensure the regional electric grid remains reliable and resilient, officials explained. The 138-kilovolt transmission line runs south from a substation in Boardman Township to a substation in Stratton and crosses Beaver, Fairfield, Elkrun, Madison, Yellow Creek and Saline townships.

Insulators separate high-voltage transmission lines from their grounded support towers and help maintain safe, consistent delivery of power. Crews from Ohio Edison, another FirstEnergy subsidiary, will perform a 10-mile portion of the insulator replacement work between Boardman Township and the Columbiana County line, while the balance of the replacements will be handled by a contractor that carries line workers to the top of the transmission towers using a helicopter.

ATSI began replacing the insulators in July and expects to complete the replacements along the corridor this fall.
