STEUBENVILLE -- Five more ballfields in the city will be scheduled for upgrades.
Steubenville City Council Tuesday passed emergency legislation authorizing City Manager Jim Mavromatis to move forward with the field updates, a project one council member said has a price tag approaching $90,000.
Parks and Recreation Director Lori Fetherolf said four fields at Belleview Park and another at Murphy Field will be improved. A sixth, North End Field, is already being addressed with grant money, so it's not included in the ordinance.
"They will be (removing) existing dirt and replacing it with new field dirt and all new bases," Fetherolf said. "Field 5 at Belleview will be turned into a Little League field with the outfield being moved in and the mound taken out."
Murphy field will have the infield grass removed for better maintenance, she said.
Also Tuesday:
• Councilwoman at large Kimberly Hahn sunshined legislation that would authorize Mavromatis to move forward with the Beatty Park Bridge replacement project. City Engineer Mike Dolak reported plans are "60 percent to 70 percent done," and if all goes as planned bid opening could be mid-December.
• Fifth Ward Councilman Willie Paul introduced legislation that would authorize Mavromatis to apply for a Water Pollution Control Funds Grant for the CS03 line replacement project, Phase I. Council adopted the same ordinance last year, and Utilities Director Chuck Murphy explained it's a WPCF requirement until the work is complete and "no new money" is involved.
• Paul also introduced legislation authorizing Mavromatis to seek bids for "necessary supplies" for the service department.
• Fire Chief Carlo Capaldi told council repairs to the Pleasants Heights fire station roof necessitated by storm damage earlier this year have been completed.
Council also heard first reading of an ordinance authorizing Mavromatis to contract with W.E. Quicksall & Associates for professional engineering services for a bulk water sales station project.
