BLOOMINGDALE -- Registration is set to begin for adult education classes at Jefferson County Joint Vocational School.
Anyone interested may sign up from Monday through Aug. 31 and Sept. 5-7 by contacting the school from 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., but registration will continue until the first night of class with payment due at that time.
Anyone age 18 and over may sign up at the school located at 1509 county Highway 22A in Bloomingdale and the fall term will offer courses in computers, trade and industry and special interests. Classes start Sept. 12 and run for one to nine weeks and some may be free while others may include fees and additional charges for supplies, textbooks and other materials. A certificate of completion will be given at the conclusion to students who enrolled in certain programs and have attended at least 60 percent of the classes.
Adult Education Coordinator Rich Wilinski said a variety of classes were available to pique people's interest.
"We're still offering classes that have been popular, such as Conversational Italian that was successful last term," Wilinski said. "I would like to see people get involved in the Home Defense class which teaches how to better secure your home against home invasions. It also has legal aspects to getting a concealed carry license."
He said the latter is a six-week course taught by a certified instructor on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. starting Sept. 13. Costs are $35 plus book fees.
Wilinski said scrapbooking was an eight-week course on Wednesdays and also start on Sept. 13. The class runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for a $35 cost and allows students to hone their creativity.
"People complete albums (on special interests.) Supplies will be provided and there will be a giveaway in each class of new and gently used items," he said. Wilinski noted that classes have been well attended and he hoped to see it continue.
"We've continued to have great turnout during the past few semesters and we're hoping to have more."
Among the computer courses are Basic Computing, a five-week session set for Tuesdays starting Oct. 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for $40; iPhone and iPad Basics, a one-week course slated for Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 18-19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for $20; and Android Smartphone and Tablet, a one-week session on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for $10. Participants must bring their devices to class.
Trade and industries programs include Small Engine Repair, a six-week session on Thursdays starting Sept. 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for $30, and Basic Electricity, an eight-week course on Tuesdays starting Sept. 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for $70. The latter will be provided if an instructor is on board.
Special interest classes featured are Guitar with an eight-week session on Thursdays starting Sept. 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for $35; Dance with a five-week session on Thursdays starting Sept. 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for free; Decorative Painting for the Beginner, a six-week course on Tuesdays starting Sept. 19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for $35 plus supplies; Decorative Painting, a six-week course on Thursdays beginning Sept. 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for $35 plus supplies; Advanced Quilting, an eight-week course on Wednesdays starting Sept. 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for $35; Beginners Quilting, an eight-week program on Tuesdays starting Sept. 12 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for $35; Conversational Italian, an eight-week course on Wednesdays starting Sept. 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for $35; and Knitting for Beginners, an eight-week course on Thursdays starting Sept. 14 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for $35.
A minimum of seven students must be registered before a class can proceed and officials will only notify those if the class is canceled. JCJVS reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment and a full refund will be made. If a withdrawal is made prior to the second class, a refund will be made minus a $10 processing fee. Please allow two to four weeks for the refund to be processed. There is no pre-registration fee but only cash or checks will be accepted for payment.
