Wednesday fun in Wintersville
DATING GAME — Bobby Zinsmeister, a teacher at Indian Creek High School, and members of the school’s drama club staged their own episode of the throwback game show, “The Dating Game.” The choice for using the game was in keeping with Wednesdays in Wintersville’s June theme, Summer of Love. CAR SHOW — Vintage cars were among the activities taking place during June’s Wednesdays in Wintersville event. Steubenville residents Greg Woltornist and Mary Scott were among those looking at the older, well-cared-for automobiles of which owners have great pride. -- Warren Scott
KEEPING IT COOL — Jazz was among the various styles of music performed by Matt Hill and Friends during the Wednesdays in Wintersville event based on the Mardi Gras theme. Visitors gathered outside of the Wintersville Municipal Building to listen to the music while shopping at the many booths offered by craft and food vendors. -- Warren Scott
WEDDING DRESSES — Wedding dresses adorned the inside of the Center of Hope at Wintersville United Methodist Church as a part of June’s Summer of Love theme for the festivities at the Wednesdays in Wintersville event. Under the theme Summer of Love, the wedding dresses were all donated for the occasion, following an invitation for area residents to submit their dresses, along with a photo taken during their wedding. Kathy and Joe Dunlevy from Steubenville were among those taking time to peruse the many dresses on loan to the church. Among the items collected were a dress worn by Sophia Ladomersky in 1911. Another dress was worn by Ladomersky’s daughter, Magdalene Rock in 1944. Rock’s photo included her and her groom, Edward. He dressed in his military uniform for the service. -- Warren Scott
REFRESHMENTS — Those at the Wintersville United Methodist Church served snow cones to area patrons during May’s Mardi Gras-themed event at the Wednesdays in Wintersville festival. Amy McGrath of Wintersville, left, and her 2-year-old daughter, Illyanna enjoyed the cold refreshments during the warm, summer-like weather. The church has been offering the special treats free of charge to guests. The church allows the use of its parking lot to those at the festival, including the Wednesdays in Wintersville committee for their setup of a bounce house and other activities for children. A few booths which are manned by other churches and groups also utilize the space. -- Warren Scott
VISITING ARTIST — Thomas Ott, a local artist, was one of many individuals selling their assorted creations during the Mardi Gras-themed Wednesdays in Wintersville event. Ott’s stand included assorted jewelry and paintings. He created his art at Valley Wine Cellar while visitors to Exquisite Creations by Joel were invited to play the shop’s piano. -- Warreen Scott

WINTERSVILLE -- A summer of love, Mardi Gras, a hoedown and a carnival. What do these events have in common? Ordinarily, the answer would be nothing. However, on this occasion, the correct answer (in the form of a question) would be, "What are themes to this year’s Wednesdays in Wintersville?"
The festival, which is in its third year, made its return to the village in May. Held on the first Wednesday of the month, the event will run through September.
May featured a Mardi Gras theme, allowing for residents an opportunity to adorn themselves in masks and attire relevant to the New Orleans celebration.
Dogs dressed in costumes. Craft booths and food vendors lined Grove Street and Matt Hill and Friends performed jazz and other styles of music. Most elements of the popular street fair remain the same.
However, the moving of vendors and crafters to where the entertainment performs is one of the changes made this year. According to volunteer organizers Joel John and Mary Decker, Wintersville United Methodist Church still continues offering activities for children, along with a few booths, outside its Center for Hope along Main Street.
A Summer of Love was the theme for June. Several events centered around the topic, including Wintersville’s version of the show, "The Dating Game." Students from Indian Creek High School’s drama club performed. Student Wyatt Doan asked questions of bachelorettes Ilsa Zinsmeister, Abigail Zinsmeister and Lilly McElroy to see who he would choose as his date.
"The Price is Right," may not have featured master of ceremonies Drew Carey, but it did have host Joel John, who listened as Garrett Evans of Steubenville tried to correctly guess an item’s price.
Prizes such as dinners and lamps were awarded to winners.
Wednesdays in Wintersville runs from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month. Upcoming themes include: Hoedown, featuring a bluegrass band, July 5; Carnival, with music by Two Friends Trio, Aug. 2; and Homecoming, with local marching bands performing, Sept. 6.
