STEUBENVILLE -- City officials were asked this week to "look into taking action on properties that are out of compliance."
First Ward Councilwoman Asantewa Anyabwile told City Council during Tuesday's meeting "it's some of the same properties, weeds are falling down into streets. (With) others, the weeds are at the windows."
"I hope to get with our law director (Costa Mastros) and Bernie Battistel possibly look at what other cities are doing with their ordinances," Anyabwile said.
Third Ward Councilwoman Heather Hoover told council she'd also reached out to the city's litter control officer about properties in her ward.
"It is an issue," she said. "I can say a couple of streets in my ward, it's a grave issue."
"It's more than a couple of streets in my ward," Anyabwile rejoined.
Council, meanwhile, approved emergency legislation authorizing City Manager Jim Mavromatis to contract with James White Construction Co. for the Pico Street and Hollywood Boulevard storm line repairs; heard the first reading of an ordinance declaring buildings at 234 S. Eighth St., 315 Union Ave., 329 Union Ave., 406 Spring Ave., 408 Spring Ave., 138 Butte St., 719 North St. and Marsh Alley, 1507 Ridge Ave., 1399 Orchard St., 849 Lincoln Blvd. and 1412 Oregon Ave. to be public nuisances, paving the way for their demolition; and signed off on Mayor Jerry Barilla's appointment of Herbert Crossland to the Parks and Recreation Board, fulfilling the unexpired term in office of Eliza Kelly, who resigned.
Councilwoman at large Kimberly Hahn reported 150 kids were at Belleview Pool on opening day.
Fifth Ward Councilman Willie Paul sunshined emergency legislation calling for a vote on a three-year contract with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 2015.
He also introduced legislation that would update Steubenville's Table of Organization, amend city code to clean up language pertaining to holiday pay and give new hires their second holiday pay.
