Preparations under way for Weirton Greek Festival
WEIRTON — While the 36th Weirton Greek Festival is still a couple of weeks away, area residents looking forward to sampling some of their favorite Greek food items can now place their orders.
The festival, organized by parishioners of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, will be held July 14, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the church located at 3528 West St.
Pre-orders can be made online at www.allstswwv.org, or by phone from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays at (304) 797-9884, and include half Greek chicken dinners; souzoukakia (meatballs) dinners; grape leaves; Greek style green beans; pastitsio; rice pilaf; spanakopita; super gyro; apethakia (pear-shaped cookies with clove coated in sugar and cinnamon); baklava; finikia (oblong cookies dipped in a honey syrup and ground walnuts); koulourakia (twist butter cookies); and kourambiethes (butter cookies with nuts coverd in powdered sugar).
Orders will be accepted until noon on July 11, or until items are sold out.
On the day of the festival, walk-up orders will be available for grape leaves, spanakopita, super gyro, baklava, baklava sundaes, loukoumathes and snow cones until they are sold out. Organizers encourage those wishing to place large orders to do so ahead of time.
Music will be provided by a disc jockey for much of the day, with a Greek dance troop set to perform traditional dances at 7:30 p.m.
Seating will be available only under an outdoor tent.
In keeping with the Greek senses of faith and philotimo, tours of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church will be offered to visitors.
Organizers note, once again, some of the proceeds from the Weirton Greek Festival will be donated to local organizations working to help those in the Weirton area. Last year’s recipients were Brooke Place and the Salvation Army.
