COLUMBUS -- Members of the Herald-Star staff have been named finalists in seven categories in the 2022 Ohio Associated Press Media Editors contest.
Three finalists in each of the contest's categories were named Monday. The order of finish will be announced May 7 during the annual awards banquet at the Villa Milano Banquet and Conference Center in Columbus.
"Members of our staff work hard every day, not to win awards, but to provide our readers with the best coverage of our region," said Ross Gallabrese, executive editor of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times. "Knowing that the work of our writers and editors has been recognized as being among the best in the state is gratifying -- especially because the finalists have been selected by our peers."
Staff writer Linda Harris has been named a finalist in the best news writer category. She is joined by Erin Couch and Chris Crook at the Zanesville Times Recorder.
Gallabrese is a finalist in the category of best editorial writer. He is joined by Ed Puskas of The (Ashtabula) Star Beacon and Benjamin Lanka of The (Newark) Advocate.
Sports Editor Andrew Grimm is a finalist in the best sports columnist and best sports writer categories. Joining him in the columnist category are Andy Baskin of the Cleveland Jewish News and Sam Blackburn of the Zanesville Times Recorder. Other finalists in the sports writer category are Albert Grindle of the Medina Gazette and Kurt Snyder of The (Newark) Advocate.
Members of the staff are finalists in the best public service, best special sports section and best sports enterprise categories.
"Progress 2022" is a finalist in best public service, and is joined by Erin Gardner of The (Celina) Daily Standard for "Water Safety" and Michaela Sumner of The (Newark) Advocate for "Everyone should know CPR."
"Prep Football 2022" is a finalist in the best special sports section category. The other finalists in that category are Albert Grindle of The Medina Gazette for "2022 Gazette Football Preview" and Kurt Snyder and Dave Weidig of The (Newark) Advocate for "Newark Advocate Football Weekly."
"Football Xtra" earned a spot as a finalist in the best sports enterprise category, as did Kurt Snyder of The (Newark) Advocate for "Umpire Shortage" and Tom Haines of The (Celina) Daily Standard for "Vanishing Referees."
"The dedication to their profession shown by members of our staff is second to none," said John Hale, publisher of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times. "We are proud of the work they do on a daily basis and are thrilled to see those efforts recognized."
The Herald-Star competes in Division II, which includes newspapers with a daily circulation between 8,000 and 11,999. The awards are for news and sports stories, feature stories, editorials, columns, graphics and photos published during 2022.
