Follansbee man in officer-involved shooting is dead
FOLLANSBEE — The man who was shot by a Brooke County sheriff’s deputy early Saturday following a four-hour stand-off with multiple law enforcement agencies has died.
Brooke County Sheriff Rich Beatty confirmed Tuesday morning that Joseph “Joey” Henderson, 42, of 8085 Highland St., had died earlier that day at the Pittsburgh hospital where he was transported following the shooting.
Beatty said earlier local police were dispatched after the Brooke County Emergency 911 Center received a call alleging that Henderson was attempting to break into another home on Highland Street at about 12:30 a.m.
The sheriff said members of the West Virginia State Police and special response teams from the Brooke and Hancock county sheriffs’ departments and Weirton Police later joined investigating officers from Follansbee and his department at Henderson’s home, where he had barricaded himself.
Beatty said following four hours of unsuccessful negotiations, tear gas was released into Henderson’s home and he was seen, brandishing a handgun, as he fled from the rear of his home.
The sheriff said one of his deputies fired a shot at Henderson soon after he emerged.
As an officer-involved shooting, the incident is under investigation by the West Virginia State Police.
Asked if alcohol or drugs played any part, Beatty said Henderson’s body is to undergo an autopsy by the Allegheny County coroner’s office.
