STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County commissioners awarded the county Road 34 slip repair contract Thursday to a local firm.
Howard Bowers Contracting Co. of Wintersville had bid $349,877 for the contract. The only other company interested in doing the work was Ohio-West Virginia Excavating of Powhattan, which submitted a bid that was less than $300 higher. The engineer's estimate had been $385,343.
Commissioner Dave Maple abstained from the vote because he's currently doing business with Howard Bowers Contracting.
John Fayak of the Dunlope-Shorac Funeral Home was appointed to the Workforce Development Board, effective immediately, and Commissioner Eric Timmons was named to fill a slot on the Local Emergency Planning Committee.
Commissioners renewed the county's malware protection license, agreeing to pay CDW-G $7,432 to protect the county's computer network. County officials are looking into other options that may provide better protection, so the renewal is for just one year.
Commissioners also opened bids for aggregates, bituminous and asphalt concrete products for 2023 for the engineering department.
They also agreed to send a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation in support of building a direct access road to Weirton's Frontier Crossing. The project cost is estimated at $25 million, and they're asking the federal department for $20 million and the state of West Virginia for the other $5 million.
Commissioners said they'll also be meeting with the Warren Water Authority about the possibility of taking over their system.
