Buckeye North Elementary busy with fun, fundraising
BRILLIANT — Buckeye North Elementary students are keeping busy for the month of March with a series of fun and fundraising festivities.
Principal Susan Nolan said pupils in grades 4-6 will join classes from Buckeye South and West at Buckeye Local High School for a presentation of “Annie Jr.” March 17. Students will depart after 9 a.m. for a preview of the musical and will return in time for lunch.
The same grades will also put their most creative spin on turning trash to treasure for the J.B. Green Team’s annual Trashy Art Contest. Their unique artwork will be displayed at the Fort Steuben Mall on March 24-26 from 3-5 p.m. and will be judged a penny per vote. Anyone may vote for entries using any monetary denomination, with a quarter equaling 25 votes and a dollar equaling 100. All proceeds from the voting will be donated to charity. Voting will take place March 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with winners announced that Saturday at noon. Winners will receive a $100 Amazon gift card for first place, $50 gift card for second and $25 gift card for third while all students will receive a goodie bag and certificate for participating.
Meanwhile, all students will take part in their third nine weeks’ incentive — a dance party to be held March 18. Nolan said students who have exhibited good behavior throughout the quarter will be permitted to attend while a photographer will be on hand to take photos. Pictured cost $1 each and refreshments such as chips and bottled water will be sold for 50 cents each. Money earned from the photos and snack sales will benefit the fourth- and fifth-grade field trip to Carnegie Science Center.
More plans are in the works for April with a coloring contest for Child Abuse Awareness Month. Coloring sheets will be provided for students to color. Additionally, the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority and BLHS Fellowship of Christian Athletes will hold Lunch with the Easter Bunny on April 3 at the high school. Doors open at noon with activities starting at 1 p.m. It will feature raffles, a cakewalk, craft, storytime and an Easter egg hunt. The cost is $5 per person and $2 for photos and proceeds fund a scholarship for a graduating BLHS senior.
