Inmate escapee recaptured

STEUBENVILLE — An inmate from Eastern Ohio Correctional Center jumped the fence shortly after midnight Thursday, but was recaptured within the hour.

The escapee, Joseph Mitchell, had been spotted at Kings Truck Stop in Wintersville trying to open doors to tractor-trailers and asking for rides to Steubenville, using a fictitious name, Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies said. He was located by deputies and City Police minutes later in downtown Steubenville in the backseat of an older red Chevy Tahoe.

Mitchell, 27, of 492 S. Fifth St., Steubenville, was booked into the Jefferson County jail on charges of escape as well as falsification after authorities say he gave them a family member’s name when he was asked to identify himself. He’d originally been sentenced to EOCC in Jefferson County for weapons under disability.

A passenger, Jazmain Bond, 18, 492 S. Fifth St., Steubenville, was charged with falsification.

The driver of the car, Reginald Dwayne Johnson, 46, 519 Grandview Ave., Steubenville, was cited for no operator’s license.

Mitchell cut his hand on the fence during his escape and required 15 stitches, deputies said.
