Board approves funding for EGCC

COLUMBUS — The State Controlling Board has approved funding for Eastern Gateway Community College in Steubenville.

The Controlling Board released $1,795,642.00 in funds to assist with the replacement of the community college’s current HVAC system.

“I am pleased to see the state’s investment in Jefferson County, which will help ensure our future generations have quality facilities where they can learn and grow,” state Rep. Ron Ferguson, R-Wintersville, said.

Eastern Gateway’s current HVAC system has far exceeded its life expectancy, so replacement is necessary. The funding will ensure a more effective and efficient system, which will reduce annual operating expenses and maintenance costs.

Candidate filing period to start

WELLSBURG — The filing period for candidates in this year’s county and state election races has begun and will continue through Jan. 29 at the county elections office in the Brooke County Courthouse.

The courthouse is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and will be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 29, the last Saturday in the filing period.

Offices up for election and the filing fees required of them include: a seat on the county commission, which must be filled by a resident of the Wellsburg Magisterial District, $399.17; magistrate (the unexpired term of Robin Snyder), $579; county clerk and circuit court clerk, both $598.75; county surveyor, $10; and three seats on the county school board, $25.

The school board seats may be filled by a resident of the Weirton, Follansbee or Wellsburg magisterial districts, but there may be no more than two from one district.

Executive committee seats at various levels in the Republican and Democratic parties also will appear on ballots.
