Man arrested trying to carry gun into courthouse

STEUBENVILLE — A city resident is in custody after he allegedly attempted to carry a gun into the Jefferson County Justice Center Tuesday for a custody hearing.

Norman DeJuan Brown, 42, of 361 Summit Ave. was arrested Tuesday as he arrived in court for a child custody hearing. He has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, violating a protection order, conveying a prohibited item into a government facility and having a weapon under disability, deputies said.

The protection order had been issued to the child’s mother, who was at the hearing.

The gun, a .32 caliber pistol, was discovered inside a black leather bag when it went through the scanner in the justice center lobby. Deputies said the gun was loaded, and two other bullets were found in the bag.

Brown told deputies he didn’t know the gun was in the bag and said his girlfriend “apparently grabbed the wrong bag, which contained the firearm.”

Deputies said Brown has had previous run-ins with the law, including charges felony domestic violence, assault, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, drug possession and drug trafficking, deputies said.
