JEWETT -- The Custer Memorial Association is making plans for its annual June observance and preparing the museum and monument grounds for the upcoming spring, summer and autumn seasons.
The museum will be open on the last Sunday of April through September from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Masks will be necessary as directed and practicing social distancing will be necessary. If there are visitors at one section of the room, guests will be asked to advance to another display until the desired area is free of visitors, according to David Rose, president. Custer was born Dec. 5, 1839, in New Rumley.
With the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affecting the association in a financial way, the group was pleased to have the donations of the past Golden sponsors back this year. They are the Scio American Legion, Scio Dining Fork Ruritan, Scott Pendleton and the Heritage Veterinary Care, Don Bethel and Cadiz Insurance, Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home, Dale Norris and Ward and Associates. Others have given more than their annual membership fees and for this also have been thanked.
Dwayne Myers made a donation of Civil War and historical magazines and books on the war and Abraham Lincoln that will be available for sale at the gift shop starting the first Saturday in June. George Custer presenter Rich Williams has accepted the invitation to attend. the event summer event and talk, and Steve and Lisa Ball will do a musical program on the songs that President Abraham Lincoln enjoyed. Dr. Mandal Haas and his Civil War cannon and his operating crew are likely to return.
It is not known whether the New Rumley United Methodist Church will open for refreshments and use of the sanctuary for entertainment. The museum will be open regardless with state guidance on health precautions in effect. Rose is looking for a guest speaker and topic for the June observance and the Custer birthday party in December. Anyone with ideas can contact Rose.
Herman Neimayer, his son, Alex, and the rest of the family did work on the Custer sign at the Ruritan Park in Jewett. A smaller sign at the museum front was damaged by a wind storm but has been repaired. But on Feb. 24, the two corporation limit signs at the end of New Rumley on state Route 646 were reported missing and had been removed from their posts.
Officers who have been working on the project include Rose, president; Kevin Haney, vice president; Leroy VanHorne, secretary; Ed Chapdelaine, treasurer; and Dwayne Meyers, Aaron Scott and James Thompson, members of the board of directors.
