Authorities investigating shooting on Route 22

WINTERSVILLE — A shooting and car crash Thursday night on U.S. Route 22 left one man dead and authorities trying to unravel not just how it happened but why it happened.

Troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the victim as Stanley Haywood, 34, of Steubenville. He was flown by Stat MedEvac to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead.

“He had a gunshot wound when troopers arrived on scene and had injuries from the crash as well,” said Trooper Brice A. Nihiser, regional public information officer with the patrol. “I’m not privy to information as to whether he was shot in the car and I don’t want to speculate. We don’t know any of those kinds of details yet — that’s why we’re investigating.”

Officers from the patrol’s Steubenville Post and other law enforcement agencies responded to reports of an accident with injuries at 11:42 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 11, but when they got to the scene Nihiser said they “discovered the driver had suffered injuries from the crash and also had an apparent gunshot wound.”

Mile marker 11 is between the Lovers Lane and state Route 43 exits.

“Obviously, we’re still investigating,” Nihiser said.

“Right now, essentially what they have is a crash and a driver that has gunshot wounds. We’re trying to make sure we know where everything happened.”

So far, Nihiser said no other car was involved, “that we know of.”

“This is basically being treated as a single-vehicle crash with a single occupant,” he said. “No other vehicles at this time, at this stage of the investigation, have been identified.”

Nihiser said OSHP has set up a tip line for anyone who might have information about the crash or the shooting. Anyone with information pertinent to the investigation can call investigators at (740) 439-1388.

One lane of Route 22 in each direction was closed during the investigation, with Route 22 west being closed for about an hour while the scene was being processed. The roadway was reopened around 4 a.m.

Assisting were Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies, Wintersville police, Wintersville firefighters and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
